Getting Proper Exercise For Your Dog

Ask yourself, how much energy does my dog have? Is he or she running laps in the living room? Chances are that if you answered yes to this question your pet pal isn't getting enough exercise. For most dogs, one hour per day is sufficient. However, more high energy dogs may need as much as two hours per day. Certain breeds of dogs such as Cattle dogs, Huskies, and German Shepherds are known to be breeds with lots of excess energy.
Denial of adequate exercise could result in your dog destroying furniture, shoes, running around your home, barking excessively, or even in some cases play biting. As the saying goes, “a tired dog is a good dog”.
Try to incorporate the following into your daily routine: brisk walking or jogging in your neighborhood, jogging on a trail, playing fetch, or taking your dog to your local dog park.
Ask yourself, what activity works best for your dog? Does he or she like one on one attention or running in a pack with other dogs? How much time do you have per day? Do you have a dog walker or a friend that can help? Does your dog get along with other dogs and is okay with people?
One of my clients has a high energy three year old Pitbull. I walk this pitty a few times a week and she has tons of energy. I take her jogging with me for about 60 minutes to an hour and a half. When we arrive back to the house she takes a much needed nap.
Remember to always bring an adequate amount of water on your walks. I sometimes bring treats as well to encourage good behavior.
